Thanksgiving Conversations

4 ways to prepare for questions about your college search

While your Thanksgiving host prepares shopping lists, pulls the turkey out of the freezer, and sets the table, there are ways you, too, can prepare for the inevitable barrage of questions from well-meaning relatives about your future plans, particularly your college search. Regardless of your family dynamics, questions from relatives can be challenging, but with some preparation and a positive mindset, you can take control of the conversations and make them work for you.

Tip #1 - Create an Elevator Pitch

Before sitting down to dinner, make a short list of your own college priorities and goals. Then, imagine answering the questions your relatives may ask you, and develop an "elevator pitch" to help you answer succinctly and share only the information you want to share. Your pitch could include a few key factors you're looking for in a college including your intended major, location, size, or type of college. Having a concise response will not only make you feel more prepared but will also keep the conversation focused.

Tip #2 - Be a United Front

Have discussions with your immediate family about your college search before the big family gathering. You don’t want the first time you talk about college with your parents to be in front of relatives who may complicate the conversation. Identify difficult topics that you anticipate, and work together as a team to strategize how you’re going to navigate them.

Tip #3 - Turn the Tables

After sharing your elevator pitch, turn the conversation around and ask your relative about their own experiences. Ask about their college days, career paths, and any advice they might have. This not only shifts the focus but also shows that you value their wisdom. However, remember that a lot has changed at colleges and within the landscape of admissions since Uncle Ned attended college 30 years ago. Check reputable sources before you rely on relatives’ advice related to admission.

Tip #4 - Embrace Uncertainty

It's okay not to have all the answers. If you're unsure about your future plans or college choices, be honest about it. Expressing vulnerability opens the door for valuable advice from family members who have been through similar experiences and who know you well. Your Thanksgiving table may represent a wide variety of career paths. If you are undecided about your future plans (or even if you are not!) take advantage of a captive audience and people’s interest in talking about themselves, to gain insights about different careers.

Thanksgiving is a time of gratitude. Acknowledge your family members’ curiosity and express your appreciation for the support and interest your family is showing in you and your future. You may just find that talking about college search could not only be helpful to you, but could help you strengthen your support system for the months and years ahead.
